How to Make Waffles
How to Make Waffles
By Eva Allison
The whisking hands must be filled with age and
veins that peek through large and loose arms. Hands that
held both granddaughters close. It’s box mix, but it never
tastes as good as when it’s served in this kitchen,
California sun painting our skin awake.
The recipe requires a waffle maker older than
my childhood, black and slick. Place the batter,
watch for burns, take out, repeat. Cut into fourths
and serve to the younger mouths
who are unaware that soon, nothing will
ever taste so good. That soon, the California hills,
this house, will be etched in ink in the tops of
their hearts. Him, at the top of the mountain,
quiet. Listening to the hummingbirds.
